Biography:

Troy Thompson grew up in Spring, Texas and received a B.S. in Agricultural Economics from Sam Houston State University in 1987. He earned his Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University in 1989. While at A&M, Troy served as President of the Graduate Student Association for the Department of Agricultural Economics. Following graduation, Troy worked as a research associate at Texas A&M for six years. During that time, he developed a bio-economic rice simulation model with Texas Agricultural Experiment Station (TAES) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists, and assisted in the development of a large mathematical programming-based planning model for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Agricultural and Foodservices Operations.

In January 1996, Troy accepted his first position in the energy sector, where he would spend the next 19 years of his career. As a market analyst for Halliburton in Houston, Troy was responsible for analyzing and monitoring world oil and natural gas supply and demand and global economic conditions. In 2003, Troy was promoted to Manager for Strategic Intelligence and Business Analysis at Halliburton, where he served as a leader and participant in several special project studies, including North American pressure pumping capital equipment allocation and new market/product service line entry. 

In 2007, Troy began his career with Chevron in Houston as the Market Intelligence Manager, where he managed a team of analysts located in Houston and Singapore and oversaw information and analysis in support of strategic sourcing and contracting for the procurement supply chain function. Currently, Troy is the Business Planning and Analytics Manager within the Procurement and Supply Chain Management (P/SCM) function at Chevron Corporation in Houston, Texas.  In this capacity, he is a member of the Procurement Leadership Team and manages a group of more than 100 employees, including college new hires. He is responsible for providing business planning, analytical services, and market intelligence to the P/SCM management organization enterprise wide. In 2013, he received Chevron’s prestigious “Chairman’s Award” for his work in integrating Procurement/Supply Chain considerations into Chevron’s business planning processes.

Troy’s commitment to the energy sector is also demonstrated through his membership in various organizations within the industry. He is a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), Institute for Supply Management (ISM), and the National Association for Business Economics (NABE). Troy currently serves as the President of the United States Association for Energy Economics (USAEE), an organization of roughly one thousand energy economics professionals and also serves as a council member of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). In 2010, he was recognized as a USAEE Senior Fellow and received a Professional Service award from the Western Agricultural Economics Association (WAEA).  

In addition to Troy’s contributions to the energy sector, he has remained an active member of both his community and Texas A&M. Troy has served as a Deacon at the Church of Christ in Champions, Texas since 1997 and as an Assistant Scoutmaster of Pack 1324 and Troop 1323 in the Boy Scouts of America. In 2014, he was elected to the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association Board of Directors. At Texas A&M, Troy is a member of the Association of Former Students. He and his wife Kelly are active donors through the Texas A&M Foundation to the Department of Agricultural Economics Rural Entrepreneurship program, teaming with Chevron to underwrite scholarships for the program’s annual poster competition.

Troy and his wife Kelly reside in Spring, Texas and have two sons, Nathan, married to Elizabeth Burke, and Hayden.
